Tip Calculation Formula
Tip = Bill × Tip% Total = Bill + Tip Per Person = Total ÷ Number of People

Frequently Asked Questions
Standard tipping in the US: 15% for adequate service, 18-20% for good service, 20%+ for excellent service. In many other countries, tipping is not expected or included. Check local customs when traveling.
Technically, tip on the pre-tax amount since tax goes to the government, not the server. However, tipping on the total is common and simpler. For a 20% tip, the difference is usually just a few dollars.
For even split: total ÷ number of people. For itemized split: each person pays their items plus proportional share of shared items and tip. Our calculator handles both methods and adjusts tip per person.
Tip normally despite slow service (may not be servers fault). Consider reducing for rude service. Many countries (Japan, South Korea, much of Europe) dont expect tips. Counter service/takeout typically warrants $1-2 or no tip.
