How to Use

Calculate alcohol dilution ratios

1

Enter starting alcohol

Input volume and ABV of your alcohol

2

Enter target ABV

Input desired final alcohol percentage

3

Dilution Formula

Water to Add = (Current Volume × Current ABV / Target ABV) - Current Volume

Based on V1 × C1 = V2 × C2. Account for volume contraction (~3-4%) for precise measurements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Use the formula: V1 × C1 = V2 × C2. V1 = initial volume, C1 = initial concentration, V2 = final volume, C2 = final concentration. To dilute 1L of 95% alcohol to 40%: 1 × 95 = V2 × 40, so V2 = 2.375L total (add 1.375L water).

ABV (Alcohol By Volume) is the percentage of alcohol. Proof is double the ABV in the US (80 proof = 40% ABV). UK proof is 1.75× ABV. Always check which system is used. Our calculator converts between them.

Its an exothermic reaction - alcohol and water molecules bond together, releasing energy as heat. The mixture also contracts in volume (1L water + 1L alcohol ≠ 2L). Allow mixture to cool before measuring final volume.

Use distilled or filtered water for best results. Hard water minerals can affect taste and clarity. Spring water works but may add subtle flavor. Never use tap water with chlorine - it can create off-flavors.
