GPA Formula

GPA = Σ(Credit Hours × Grade Points) / Σ(Credit Hours)

Sum of (credits × grade value) divided by total credits. Standard scale: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0.

Frequently Asked Questions

GPA = Total grade points / Total credit hours. Grade points = credit hours × grade value (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0). Example: 3-credit A (12 pts) + 4-credit B (12 pts) = 24 pts / 7 credits = 3.43 GPA.

Unweighted GPA uses standard 4.0 scale. Weighted GPA gives extra points for harder classes (AP/honors get 5.0 for A). Weighted GPAs can exceed 4.0. Colleges typically recalculate to their own scale.

For college admission: 3.5+ is competitive for selective schools, 3.0+ for most colleges. For graduate school: 3.0 minimum typically, 3.5+ preferred. For employment: usually only new graduates are asked; 3.0+ is typical cutoff.

Common scale: 90-100%=A(4.0), 80-89%=B(3.0), 70-79%=C(2.0), 60-69%=D(1.0), <60%=F(0). Some schools use +/- grades: A+=4.0, A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, etc. Check your schools specific scale.
