Frequently Asked Questions

Find common denominator, adjust numerators, add. Example: 1/4 + 1/3. Common denominator = 12. 1/4 = 3/12, 1/3 = 4/12. 3/12 + 4/12 = 7/12. If denominators are same, just add numerators: 2/5 + 1/5 = 3/5.

Multiply numerators together and denominators together. 2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2. Simplify by canceling common factors first: 2/3 × 3/4 = (cancel 3s) = 2/4 = 1/2.

Multiply by the reciprocal (flip the second fraction). 2/3 ÷ 4/5 = 2/3 × 5/4 = 10/12 = 5/6. Remember: "Keep, Change, Flip" - keep first fraction, change ÷ to ×, flip second fraction.

Divide numerator by denominator. 3/4 = 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75. Some fractions are repeating: 1/3 = 0.333... Common ones: 1/2=0.5, 1/4=0.25, 1/5=0.2, 1/8=0.125.
