Frequently Asked Questions
An XML sitemap lists all important URLs on your site for search engines. It helps crawlers discover pages, especially new or deep-linked content. Submit to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools for faster indexing.
Include all indexable pages: main content, blog posts, product pages, category pages. Exclude: duplicate pages, paginated archives, search results, login pages, thank you pages. Only include URLs you want indexed.
Priority (0.0-1.0) suggests relative importance of pages. Changefreq indicates update frequency (daily, weekly, monthly). Google largely ignores these; focus on accurate lastmod dates instead. These are hints, not directives.
Maximum 50,000 URLs or 50MB uncompressed per sitemap file. For larger sites, use a sitemap index file that references multiple sitemap files. Gzip compression is recommended and supported by all search engines.
