Frequently Asked Questions

UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the primary time standard. Time zones are expressed as offsets from UTC. EST is UTC-5, PST is UTC-8, JST is UTC+9. UTC doesnt observe daylight saving time.

GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) and UTC are often used interchangeably but differ technically. GMT is a time zone (UK winter time). UTC is a time standard. They show the same time, but UTC is preferred for technical use.

Daylight saving time shifts clocks forward 1 hour in spring and back in fall (in participating regions). Not all countries/states observe DST. Our converter accounts for current DST status when converting.

Line Islands (Kiribati) at UTC+14 and Baker Island at UTC-12 have the most extreme offsets. The International Date Line zigzags through the Pacific, so adjacent islands can have a 26-hour time difference.
